Jennings Bates ready to take on Targa Tabula Rasa

Philanthropic Adventurer and Rally Driver Mark Jennings-Bates will be competing in the one day Targa Tabula Rasa event in the beautiful and scenic Nakusp, BC in Canada's Kootenay region.

Two local companies, the Three Lions Pub in Nakusp and the Nelson Brewing Company have sponsored Jennings-Bates and his team for the weekend allowing them to support the inaugural Targa Canada West rally event. The event will be a performance and navigational rally which will be held on Saturday May 14th, 2011. Visitors will be able to view the teams at a Parc Expose on Saturday morning from 7:15am and then view the action on the stages. For information, visit www.targacanadawest.com.

The local host town of Nakusp, BC has been very supportive of this "proof of concept" event that is being held as a demonstration for what could become a multi day navigation and performance rally similar to The Targa Newfoundland, a prestigious and notorious rally held "on the rock" that attracts global entries and is very significant economically for the region.

Mark Jennings-Bates is an "Ambassador" for Rally4Life a Canadian Registered Charity that is currently raising $4 million to save 200,000 lives with the provision of safe water in developing countries. Mark will be participating in international race events this year to raise awareness for the Rally4Life project and will be attempting an aviation Guinness World Record in the spring of 2012.

"I am really excited to be heading to Nakusp for this event, the organsiers have done a fabulous job of putting together a really exciting day and to be honest the community has been wonderfully hospitable, it will be a great weekend for competitors and residents alike" said Jennings-Bates.

Stefanie Scambler, owner of the Three Lions Pub and one of the sponsors of Jennings-Bates' team voiced her support for the event also "As a local business, we are very pleased to see this kind of event happening in Nakusp, it is a great time of year to add this type of activity into our calendar and I am sure we will see a benefit to the local business community because of it. We are very keen to be supporting one of the race teams, it gives our customers something to engage with over the weekend."

The Three Lions Pub and Nelson Brewing Company will be hosting a party on Thursday evening at the Pub and the Rally4Life team will be present for customers to meet and chat to, including the 2004 Subaru STi that Jennings-Bates will be racing on the Saturday.

Vital Equipment appoints Philip Morrow as NI Affiliate

Posted: 03 May 2011 11:17 AM PDT

The UK distributor for Carless Racing Fuels and ENI lubricants, Vital Equipment, has appointed former works Mitsubishi British Rally Championship driver Philip Morrow as its affiliate in Northern Ireland. Using its existing infrastructure, Morrow Fuels will distribute both families of products from the Vital Equipment portfolio at race and rally meetings throughout Northern Ireland.

Morrow is no stranger to motorsport - he won the 2007 Mitsubishi Evo Challenge one-make rally series in the UK and with it, a works drive with the official Mitsubishi team in the 2008 British Rally Championship.

He recently made a welcome return to the driving seat, as he contested the Circuit of Ireland Rally in his Group N Mitsubishi Lancer EvoIX.

He is also no stranger to Vital Equipment, having assisted the company in various capacities since it began distributing the control fuel at the FIA World Rally Championship, as well as the British Touring Car Championship and the Porsche Supercup.

It was a logical decision for Vital Equipment to enlist the experience and knowledge of both Phillip and the family business, Morrow Fuels, to enable motorsport competitors in Northern Ireland to benefit from Carless Racing Fuels and ENI lubricants.

Commenting, Vital Equipment Managing Director Alistair Roberts said: "I am delighted to officially welcome Phillip and the Morrow Fuels team to the Vital Equipment operation. Phillip personally has assisted us in various capacities in the six years since we formed the company and I cannot think of a better way for our products to be offered to motorsport competitors throughout Northern Ireland than by Phillip and Morrow Fuels.

"The company has been distributing fuels and heating oil in Northern Ireland for years and this experience, coupled with Phillip's own years of motorsport experience is a natural fit. Indeed, Phillip's brother Simon is also extremely experienced, having co-driven for Phillip for years and is involved in the family business."

Busy Weekend Ahead For Paul Bird Motorsport

Posted: 03 May 2011 10:55 AM PDT

The Paul Bird Motorsport Team will be in action on both two wheels and four this weekend meaning a busy time for the Penrith-based team.

The Kawasaki Superbike Racing team heads for the historic venue of Monza in Northern Italy for round four the World Superbike Championship hoping to make up for the poor showing at Assen last month whilst team owner Paul Bird will be hoping to make history by becoming the first driver to win the Manx National Rally three years in succession.

Last time out, the Kawasaki Superbike Racing Team duo of Yorkshireman Tom Sykes and Spanish rider Joan Lascorz were looking strong but a combination of problems resulted in lowly finishes aboard their respective Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10Rs so they, along with Australian Chris Vermeulen who is continuing his recovery from injury, hope to make amends at the track near Milan.

Meanwhile Bird heads over to the Isle of Man to contest the Manx Telecom Rally at the wheel of his Frank Bird Poultry-sponsored Ford Focus WRC which he will share with Scottish co-driver Kirsty Riddick.

The former National Rally Champion took the victory laurels in 2009 and again last year so is hoping that a third successive victory is on the cards which will place him into the history books as the first driver to accomplish that feat on one of the toughest events on the calendar.

Paul Bird, Team Owner: "We were very disappointed with the results at Assen and hope that we can improve at Monza. The track should suit our bikes and hopefully Tom, Joan and Chris can do themselves as well as the team and the bikes justice this weekend. I'll be keeping a close eye on things whilst contesting the rally and hopefully we can have a dual celebration this weekend!"

The opening WSB race gets underway on Sunday 8th May at 12.00 with race two at 15.30 and British viewers can catch the action live on British Eurosport.

FIRST RALLY WIN TAKEN BY NEWALL MOTORSPORT AT PIRELLI INTERNATIONAL

FIRST RALLY WIN TAKEN BY NEWALL MOTORSPORT AT PIRELLI INTERNATIONAL

Tour of Cumbria Rally title taken back to Scotland

The West Lothian based Newall Motorsport team travelled south of the border in only their second season of rallying, and fought hard all day with fellow regular competitors Mark I'Anson & Ron Roughead (EVO FIRST RALLY WIN TAKEN BY NEWALL MOTORSPORT AT PIRELLI INTERNATIONAL to take the National B Tour of Cumbria title by 17 seconds over 71 special stage miles.

Also competing in their ever first night time event, David & Pete felt comfortable in the dark and achieved a 3rd place in that particular night stage. Combined with another clean run through the same stage near Newcastleton earlier in the daylight on Friday, at the overnight halt in Carlisle they were also sitting 3rd overall.

New tyres were fitted for the start of Saturday's stages, which comprised of double running 2 fast and technical stages in Kielder Forest. On the second run of Falstone stage they achieved their first ever stage win; bar the next stage they went on to win each of the remaining stages of the rally.

After the morning's stages, a return to rally HQ in Carlisle Racecourse for service was well needed. The
Lancer EVO 8 was suffering from ruined tyres, fading brakes & concerning noise from the left rear wheel.

Our service crew delivered the goods, replacing the front brake pads & tyres. Then the rear wheel was found to have worked loose, possibly down to faulty wheel nuts.

At service we were 16 seconds down on I'Anson & Roughead, so a serious push was required to overtake their lead in the event. The three final stages went well and we were very happy with the pace. I'Anson however lost his intercom & suffered starter motor failure. So we helped push start them into the final stage's start control to get them going. We were unaware of all stage times at the final finish control; however I'Anson declared we had got the better of him after his earlier troubles. This was confirmed in the final results that 33 seconds were gained on the final 3 stages.

David, Peter and all of the service crew team were delighted with the result. It gives us a great confidence
boost heading into the rest of the season. Despite the low entry and numbers of those who finished, a win is a win and we'll take that!

Our next event is a rally time trial at Kames circuit on 15th May; this is a small event on tarmac in preparation for the Jim Clark Reivers Rally on the 29th May, also on Tarmac. David's previous racing history is all tarmac based so the team feels confident we can keep the pace up in the transfer from loose surface events of recent.

Keep an eye on our twitter @Newall_Msport and our website www.newallmotorsport.co.uk which will be finished very soon.

A big thanks to sponsors & supporters who keep us performing to our very best!

Kick Energy team driver Simon Sharpe has pronounced himself ready for the second round of the 2011 Kenya Cross Country Championship after having completed a successful test of his unique V8 powered Platz 4x4 over the weekend.

Sharpe, who won the final round of the 2010 championship, had been expected to be the class of the field in 2011 but mechanical gremlins intervened early on during Round One, forcing the crew to become frustrated spectators instead. With the Platz having being repaired and put through a brief shakedown over the past weekend Nairobi based Sharpe is keen to get his season underway; we began the first round with a target on our back after winning at the end of 2010 but the gearbox broke very early in the rally. I'm hoping that the problems are now a thing of the past and am looking forward to heading to Baringo this weekend my season starts now.
