In-car entertainment gurus back Peugeot UK in IRC bid Posted: 04 May 2011 10:57 AM PDT Six years after last sponsoring the Peugeot World Rally Championship team, and underlining its significant, long-standing supplier relationship with Peugeot, major in-car entertainment brand, Clarion GB has again joined forces with the ultra-successful marque, pairing with Peugeot UK in their bid to win the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). This year's punishing 12-round tarmac and gravel rally series visits seven countries between January to November, and the Peugeot marque is represented by a series of national teams running the spectacular Peugeot 207 S2000, developed by Peugeot Sport in France. The Peugeot UK team is headed by new British driver/co-driver pairing of Guy Wilks of Co. Durham and co-driver Phil Pugh, from mid-Wales. With a third and fifth place under their belt from the first two rounds, at the time of writing the team are eagerly awaiting the next outing in Corsica, the Tour de Corse - traditionally known as the 'Rally of 10,000 Corners' due to its high frequency of turns - on May 12/14. The Peugeot 207 S2000 Evolution in which the team is contesting the series, is the latest offering from Peugeot, the most successful manufacturer in the IRC with 20 wins to its credit. The 207 S2000 is a standard production Peugeot 207 at heart, but performance is transformed by just a few 'adaptations'including 4-wheel drive, a 2.0 litre powerplant developing 300bhp, and a 6-speed sequential gearbox to deliver electrifying performance. Commenting on Clarion GB's sponsorship of the Peugeot UK IRC team, General Manager, Graham Case, said: "We are delighted to renew our long and highly successful motorsport sponsorship relationship with the Peugeot marque, and specifically Peugeot UK, with whom we enjoy a mutually-beneficial business relationship in the supply of Clarion audio and multimedia products. We wish the team continuing success in their bid to win the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge." |
Van Merksteijn Motorsport in full force at start of WRC Rally Sardegna Posted: 04 May 2011 10:51 AM PDT During this weekend's WRC Rally d'Italia Sardegna, father and son Van Merksteijn will see action together with the Citron DS3 WRC on the Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea. Peter van Merksteijn sr. will make his debut for the French make after being absent from the sport for almost one and a half year while his son Peter jr. will start with the DS3 WRC for the third time. Van Merksteijn Motorsport will this weekend be for the first time at the start of a WRC rally in full force with two Citron's DS3 WRC. After his entries in Portugal and Jordan, Peter van Merksteijn jr. is supported within the team by his father who will also be driving the DS3 WRC. Despite lacking experience in the DS3 WRC by Peter sr., the battle will start again about who will be the fastest within the Van Merksteijn family to drive the special stages. The Rally Sardegna will be the first time that Peter van Merksteijn sr. will get an experience in the new generation World Rally Car behind the wheel of Citron DS3 WRC. Together with his co-driver Erwin Mombaerts he will be on Thursday evening at the start in Olbia for their first rally since Rally Sweden in February 2010. Even though the Rally Sardegna is a very difficult event and Peter sr. has not tested with the car, the entrepreneur from Holland is looking forward to the start of the first stage of the rally. For peter van Merksteijn jr. it will be his third event in the 2011 WRC season in which he will start together with Eddy Chevaillier. After the premature exit during the previous round in Jordan, Peter jr. hopes to score a good result with the DS3 WRC. In preparation for this event, Peter jr. and Eddy tested last week with the car for a day in the south of France to find a good setup. KiKa As with the previous WRC rounds in Portugal and Jordan in which the team entered, Van Merksteijn Motorsport will raise money again for a charity this weekend. Per driven stage kilometer, the team will reserve an amount for KiKa, a Dutch foundation researching childhood cancer. During the last two WRC rounds an amount of 3311.34 has been raised for KiKa. The Rally Sardegna has the strongest entry list in 2011 so far with 20 World Rally Cars entered in the event. The rally is 1183 kilometers long and father and son Van Merksteijn will have to drive 18 special stages totaling 340 timed stage kilometers. The stages on the first day are situated in the centre of the island over 150 kilometers away from Olbia and the cars will not return to the service park during the afternoon for the regular service. On Saturday and Sunday the cars will stay in the northern part of Sardegna and on Sunday afternoon at 12 o'clock the Power Stage will start which will be broadcasted live on various television stations. photo: willy weyens - rallyworld |
Moore triumphs on Pirelli Challenge Rally Posted: 04 May 2011 08:06 AM PDT
Simon Moore and Emma Morrison claimed their first BRC Challenge victory after an impressive display on the Kielder stages of the Pirelli Challenge Rally this weekend. Moore took control of the event from the off, setting the fastest time on the opening stage in his yellow liveried Renault Clio, and in turn pushing round one winner and pre-event favourite Matt Edwards into second place. The seven second advantage over Edwards and the rest of the competition grew further after stage two, when Edwards suffered terminal suspension failure. His retirement not only impacted the rally, but will also have a profound effect upon the championship. One driver, who was to make a larger impression later on in the day, was the Doncaster youngster Jack Rowe. The former motocross rider was sitting in seventh place after stage one, but put in the performance of a lifetime to climb to second overall by the finish. The 13.4 mile Bower stage provided the second test of the day, but one which Moore gratefully accepted, once again claiming the fastest time ahead of the impressive Rowe. Behind Moore a tremendous battle was starting to flare up, and one which would last the entire event. Fourth, fifth and sixth place were separated by only three seconds after SS3 and the top ten by only 1 minute 46 seconds. After another stage winning time by the ever so likeable Moore and Morrison, their third in succession, they had pulled out a lead of 49.9 seconds, and one which they were never to relinquish. After service the crews headed to the short 5.25 mile Shepherdshield stage where the fight for the podium was on. Damien Smith and co-driver Frazer Hutchinson were quickest, leading the now four-way Fiesta battle that included the Bulldog Challenge Rally second place man Phil Scholes, with Jack Rowe and Mark McCulloch. With Fiesta SportChallenge points and pride also at stake, it was a fight no one wanted to be on the wrong end of and the stage times reflected it. Russ Thompson in another Clio was trying and succeeding to cling onto the Fiestas and the ensuing Ford battle, but it wasn't to last as his gearbox broke with just one stage to go. Jack Rowe took his first stage win on Pundershaw to cement his great drive and really put the pressure onto his competitors. Rowe repeated the feat on the final Chirdonhead eight miler to secure his second place, a great result for the novice wheelman. Another ex-motocross rider, Damien Smith scored his second podium of the year, finishing third ahead of Phil Scholes by a mere ten seconds. After missing the podium by such a small margin, Scholes was clearly disappointed, but acted with complete class at the finish. "I'm gutted, I've never driven so hard in my life, we picked up a puncture on the last stage but I don't think I could have caught Damien" he said. "It's never nice to be on the wrong end of a battle like that but being in battles like this is why we all go rallying" he added after congratulating the podium-sitters. "That was epic" announced Smith as he emerged from the cockpit of his Fiesta ST. "We came over the flying finish sideways, and nearly ran out of fuel on the road section back" explained the visibly exhausted Yorkshireman. If it wasn't for the performance of Moore then we would be eulogising over the performance of the second placed man Jack Rowe. The 17 year old only passed his driving test in December having decided to give up the bike racing due to injuries. The Pirelli Challenge Rally was only his fourth ever outing, and to take the Fiesta SportChallenge honours and second overall was some achievement. "We made the right tyre choice this morning which helped the front end grip, but this afternoon was just flat out in fifth throughout the stages." he said. A brave move for somebody that had never driven in Kielder before. But the crown prince and princess of the weekend were Simon Moore and Emma Morrison who dominated the field with a real display of how to tame the awesome Kielder. The north east driver was hot from the off, setting fastest stage time upon fastest stage time to arrive at the finish 37.4 seconds ahead of Rowe and Alex Lee. "I'm really chuffed; it's my first ever Challenge win and it was great to know the pace was there after we beat Matt (Edwards) on the opening stage. The new suspension worked fantastically well and gave us an edge on the fast straights". But it wasn't all plain sailing, as he described an incident on the final stage which had all four wheels off the road! "I thought I'd thrown the rally away, I just kept my foot in and the car pulled itself back" he added with a huge sigh of relief. If you can handle the excitement, the next round of the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship's support series the BRC Challenge heads to the fast tarmac roads of Scotland. The Jim Clark Challenge Rally takes the competitors onto tarmac for the first time this season over the weekend of the 27th and 28th May within the Scottish Borders. Also at the park on Friday and Saturday evening, at the end of the first and second leg of the rally, the most famous drivers of the World Rally Championship will meet the fans for an autograph session. At the start ceremony tomorrow at 20.00 on the Molo Brin in Olbia two complimentary tickets to attend the Acropolis Rally mid-June in Greece will be drawn amongst the attending spectators on the grandstands. Tomorrow afternoon Volkswagen Motorsport will announce to the press the programme which will see the German manufacturers' return to rally in 2012. photo: mini motorsport |
