Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic were all rested for United who had a 2-0 lead from the first leg. Antonio Valencia scored the opening goal in the 26th minute followed by a Darron Gibson strike in the 31st minute. Gibson, who has come under scrutiny from fans recently, responded with a strong performance. Schalke’s only goal was scored by Jose Jurado scored in the 35th minute. The visitors couldn’t build on that goal and were thoroughly outplayed for the entire match. Anderson would leave no doubt with two goals, in the 72nd minute and 76th minute, as United won 4-1. The score was 6-1 on aggregate and sets up a final with Spanish side FC Barcelona. Both sides return to their domestic leagues on the weekend.
