Even with many starters rested, the Red Devils had no trouble crushing Schalke in the second leg.

Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic were all rested for United who had a 2-0 lead from the first leg. Antonio Valencia scored the opening goal in the 26th minute followed by a Darron Gibson strike in the 31st minute. Gibson, who has come under scrutiny from fans recently, responded with a strong performance.

Schalke’s only goal was scored by Jose Jurado scored in the 35th minute. The visitors couldn’t build on that goal and were thoroughly outplayed for the entire match. Anderson would leave no doubt with two goals, in the 72nd minute and 76th minute, as United won 4-1. The score was 6-1 on aggregate and sets up a final with Spanish side FC Barcelona.

Both sides return to their domestic leagues on the weekend.

Celtic missed an opportunity to take the SPL lead as they lost at the Caledonian Stadium.

Inverness took a 1-0 lead on a 7th minute Charlie Mulgrew own goal but Celtic equalized quickly with a 9th minute Kris Commons goal. In the second half, Inverness would take the lead once again with goals from Grant Munro in the 53rd minute and Shane Sutherland in the 62nd minute.

Celtic failed to make a comeback as they only managed a 90th minute penalty kick converted by Commons. The Glasgow side are now one point behind leaders Rangers with three matches remaining. Inverness are in the middle of the table safe from relegation but too far back to contend for Europe.
